Restore Strength & Beauty
Fix broken, severely decayed, or missing teeth with precision-fitted dental crowns and bridges at Dr. Adnan's F7/1 clinic in Islamabad. Durable, natural-looking restorations that protect your remaining teeth and restore proper bite function.
Understanding the Difference
A crown and a bridge are both fixed restorations β meaning they are cemented permanently and cannot be removed. But they solve different problems.
Dental Crown
A crown is a custom cap that fits over a single damaged tooth, covering it completely from the gumline up. It restores the tooth's full shape, size, and strength.
- Protects a cracked or heavily filled tooth from fracturing
- Placed after root canal treatment to protect the treated tooth
- Covers large cavities that cannot be filled
- Restores a severely worn-down tooth
- Improves the appearance of a misshapen tooth
Dental Bridge
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by spanning the gap. It uses the teeth on either side of the gap as anchors β they are fitted with crowns β and the artificial tooth hangs between them.
- Replaces 1β3 consecutive missing teeth
- Fixed permanently β no removal needed
- Prevents neighbouring teeth from shifting into the gap
- Restores chewing function and smile aesthetics
- Faster and lower-cost than a dental implant
Which Material Is Right for Your Crown?
Crown material affects appearance, durability, and cost. Dr. Adnan will recommend the most appropriate option based on which tooth is being treated and your priorities.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM)
A metal substructure covered with porcelain. Strong and natural-looking β the most common crown type for back teeth. A thin dark line may appear at the gumline over time.
Most widely usedAll-Ceramic / Zirconia
Completely metal-free. Exceptional aesthetics β no dark gumline, highest translucency. Zirconia is extremely strong. The preferred choice for front teeth and patients with metal sensitivity.
Best aestheticsFull Metal (Gold / Alloy)
The most durable option β lasts the longest and causes the least wear on opposing teeth. Only practical for back molars where it will not be visible. Preferred by some for longevity.
Most durableSigns You May Need a Crown or Bridge
π You May Need a Crown If...
- Your tooth has had a root canal β the tooth becomes brittle and needs a crown to prevent fracture.
- A filling covers more than half the tooth β large fillings weaken the remaining structure.
- Your tooth is cracked β a crown holds the crack together and prevents it from worsening.
- The tooth is severely decayed β too damaged for a filling alone.
- A tooth is broken at the gumline β a crown rebuilds it back to full height.
π You May Need a Bridge If...
- You have one or more consecutive missing teeth β and want a fixed, non-removable solution.
- You are not a candidate for implants β due to bone loss or medical reasons.
- The neighbouring teeth already need crowns β a bridge makes clinical sense.
- You need a faster solution β a bridge is completed in 2β3 weeks vs 3β6 months for an implant.
- You want to avoid surgery β bridges require no surgical placement.
Crown & Bridge Treatment β Step by Step
Examination & X-Ray
We assess the tooth (or gap) with a digital X-ray. You receive a clear treatment plan and written cost estimate before anything proceeds.
Tooth Preparation
The tooth is shaped under local anaesthesia to receive the crown. Impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab. A temporary crown protects the tooth between visits.
Lab Fabrication
Your custom crown or bridge is fabricated in a dental lab β typically taking 1β2 weeks. The shade, shape, and fit are crafted to match your natural teeth precisely.
Fitting & Cementation
The finished crown or bridge is tried for fit, bite, and appearance β then permanently cemented. You leave with a fully restored tooth (or teeth) in a single final visit.
Crowns & Bridges FAQs
How long do dental crowns last?
+With proper care, dental crowns typically last 10β15 years or more. Zirconia crowns are among the most durable and can last 15β20 years. The lifespan depends on oral hygiene, bite habits (grinding significantly shortens crown life), and whether you attend regular checkups.
Is getting a crown painful?
+The preparation is done under local anaesthesia β you feel pressure but no pain. After the anaesthetic wears off, mild sensitivity is common for a few days. The temporary crown may also feel slightly different in your bite. The permanent crown, once properly fitted, should feel natural.
Should I choose an implant or a bridge for a missing tooth?
+An implant is generally the better long-term solution β it does not affect neighbouring teeth and prevents bone loss. A bridge is faster, less expensive upfront, and avoids surgery. If your adjacent teeth are healthy and you have adequate bone, an implant is worth discussing. We provide written pricing for both at your consultation so you can compare properly.
What is the difference between porcelain and zirconia crowns?
+Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns have a metal core with a porcelain outer layer β strong, but can show a grey line at the gumline. All-ceramic zirconia crowns are metal-free β better aesthetics, no gumline issue, and extremely strong. Zirconia is preferred for front teeth and patients who want the best appearance.
How many appointments does a crown take?
+Most crowns require 2 appointments: preparation and impressions (visit 1), and fitting and cementation (visit 2), with 1β2 weeks in between for lab fabrication. Some same-day crown systems exist, but lab-fabricated crowns offer superior fit and aesthetics.
